Scott Thornbury gives us some great tips and ideas for building dialogue in speaking activities.

In the introduction to this series, I argued that the best classroom activities are those “that not only require no materials but can be adapted to a range of levels and circumstances, and, very importantly, are highly productive”. I gave, as an example, the “Find someone who…” format as an activity type that “scores highly in terms of achieving maximal output through minimal means”.

What other generic activity types score equally highly – especially with regard to developing speaking proficiency? Traditionally, freer speaking is often practised by means of dialogues, role plays, and discussions. In this section we look at the way dialogues can be constructed 'out of nothing':

Tip: Family Album USA

 Family Album USA é uma série de vídeos para o ensino de inglês produzida pela editora MacMillan na década de 90, que até hoje é usada por escolas de inglês mundo afora. São mais de 20 episódios no estilo ‘novela’, só que usando inglês básico – present, past e future simple, e outros tempos verbais e vocabulário para iniciantes. Cada episódio tem 3 atos: no começo de cada ato, o aluno ouve um resuminho do que vai acontecer e o narrador faz uma pergunta, cuja resposta está na estória.

Vários episódios do Family Album estão no YouTube: é um recurso altamente recomendado para quem está no nível básico do inglês – além da linguagem ser apropriada, as falas dos personagens são claras sem perder a naturalidade.
